I clearly remember my mother shaking her head and wishing for a particular year to end. It had been a bad year, and in her mind the clock was about to run out on it. As if a streak of bad luck observed and endured for a twelve month period inevitably concludes with the joyous ringing in of a New Year. New digits equal a new streak of luck. and my mother's feeling was that the only way to put an end to an ugly season of life was to start up a new one. The past 13 months have been some of the best and toughest of my life. By no measure The Toughest, but challenging. There's been a lot of healing to do, and some of it related to things that were by choice (new knee), but I've had my share of lightening bolts striking as well. Admittedly,, wonderful, joyful events happened, too... but the trend was for challenges to be presented and conquered with gusto. Clearly, I need to embrace the theory of a Happy New Year and all it represents. It's a matter of survival. Distractions abound during the holidays; it's hard to find an artist who will tell you that this time of year is a productive one. Thank goodness the promise of a quiet January and February are filled with creative possibilities. My advice to artists is to plan now for future abundance. Revisit sketchbooks, buy supplies and empty the studio of 2018. If wishing can make it so, 2019 is going to be a very good year- it's time has come.
